Start with PET. For printed packaging, thermoformed trays, and most display work, PET is a safer default than PP. Stronger. Clearer. More forgiving when it comes to processing. That's the short answer to the 'pp vs pet plastic' question I hear from our new product team almost every month. The longer answer has a few caveats, plus a note about the word 'plastic' itself.

I manage purchasing for a 40-person thermoforming company. We buy plastic sheets, films, and rolls from Westlake and a handful of other suppliers—roughly $350,000 a year across 7 vendors. PP, polypropylene, is the material in one-piece living hinges, yogurt containers, and parts that need to bend thousands of times without breaking. PET won't do that. PP also resists oils, acids, and most solvents. Those are real advantages.

The catch is that PP is more sensitive to thermoforming and printing conditions. Untreated PP tends to reject ink. In 2024, a product team specified PP for a new container because 'it's the food-grade material.' We made three prototypes using PP sheet from Westlake. Ink adhesion failed on two of them. We switched to PET and hit our target color—Delta E under 2—on the first press run.

It's not the best choice for food contact or high-heat environments.

They meant PVC skirting boards—the trim installed along the bottom of a wall. We supplied a 1.2 mm textured PVC sheet from Westlake, the customer fabricated the profile, and it worked perfectly. That project was a no-brainer, but it taught me to always confirm the intended application before assuming a material.

This sounds like a small story, but it's a microcosm of a bigger problem: when people don't share the same vocabulary, specs get copied incorrectly and the wrong material gets ordered. On the eco side, Westlake offers recycled PET sheet options. We tried a 30% recycled-content PET for a non-food display project.
