For most sheet applications, HDPE is the material that shrugs off water, cleaning chemicals, and rough outdoor duty. It's lightweight, tough, and low-cost. But it has low surface energy, which makes printing and gluing difficult. If your part needs ink, paint, or adhesive, HDPE will often require corona treatment, flame treatment, or a mechanical abrasion step. That adds cost.
ABS is more forgiving on the surface side. It takes paint, printing, and solvent adhesives better. It is stiffer and holds shape well in thermoforming, so corners and details stay crisp. The trade-offs are lower outdoor UV resistance and lower chemical resistance to some solvents. If the part sits in direct sun, ABS may need paint or a UV-stabilized grade.
So the quick answer? If you need something that can handle wet or chemical-heavy conditions, HDPE is usually the safer start. If you need a good-looking formed surface that can be printed, ABS is often the better fit. If you need transparency, neither one is ideal. Stop and look at PET.
The checklist I run before every order
1. Describe the end-use conditions in writing
Before calling a supplier, I write one paragraph: indoor or outdoor, temperature range, likely chemicals, load after forming, color or print requirements, and how the part will be cleaned. In 2023, I picked ABS for a tray that a customer cleaned with a solvent-based product. The trays crazed after a few weeks. The HDPE option was less pretty, but it would have survived. Ask for material from the same extrusion lot you expect to receive. If the supplier can't do that, ask to buy enough for a pilot run before committing to the full order.
5. Put color tolerance into the quote
For colored plastic or printed parts, color consistency matters more than most buyers expect. The Pantone Color Matching System is one common reference. For brand-critical color work, a Delta E under 2 is the general guideline. Delta E between 2 and 4 can be noticeable to trained observers. Above 4, it becomes visible to most people. I ask my supplier for a spectrophotometer report on colored runs. That one question eliminates a lot of vague promises.
6. Lock down terms for quality claims before you need them
Nobody enjoys writing the paragraph about what happens if the material arrives off-spec. Write it anyway. Ask about overrun and underrun allowances, packaging conditions, lot traceability, and the window for filing a claim. I also ask for batch numbers on every order. It sounds administrative, but it makes the receiving check much faster. The supplier who answers these questions clearly is usually the supplier who has fewer quality surprises.
