I'm an office administrator for a 44-person manufacturing company. I manage our plastic sheet and film purchasing—roughly $180,000 a year across 8 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which is a polite way of saying I own the part where the material shows up on time and the invoice doesn't cause an audit headache.
I've placed maybe 200 orders since I took over this role in 2022. Maybe 180, I'd have to check the spreadsheet. What is PVC board?

It means the plastic can be melted, shaped, cooled, and melted again. That's why we can vacuum-form or heat-bend it without chemically changing the material. If a supplier says 'we sell thermoplastic PVC,' they're saying they handle the broader PVC family, not necessarily a specific board product.
What is native PET?
Native PET is virgin PET resin—polymer that hasn't been through a recycling process. Put another way: it's not rPET. Some suppliers call it 'native pet' to mean original PET pellets as opposed to flake from recycled bottles. We specify native PET for jobs where clarity, consistency, and low contamination matter, like transparent display packaging. Recycled PET works for plenty of applications, but if the part needs to be crystal clear run after run, native PET gives you a much more predictable starting material.
Why do mold inspections matter if you're just buying plastic sheet?
This is the question I didn't know to ask when I started. The material can be exactly right—correct gauge, right finish, valid lot number—but if the mold or die used in the thermoforming step is worn, the finished parts will still fail. I didn't fully understand that until we had a $4,000 order of PET sheet thermoform badly in March 2023. The material tested fine. The tool had a nicked edge. The material wasn't the problem; the mold was.
Now I include mold inspections in the pre-production process, whether the tool is in Westlake or somewhere else. Pantone colors don't have exact CMYK equivalents, and the printed result can vary by substrate and press calibration. On white PVC board, we ask the printer for a small run first. When brand color is critical, we request a Delta E measurement—the industry standard tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. That's from Pantone's Color Matching System guidelines, and it's saved us from approving a logo that looked wrong under shop lights.
What is the one question a buyer should ask before ordering PVC board?
Ask: 'What is the mold or die condition, and when was it last inspected?' Not 'What's your lowest price?' The conventional wisdom says collect three quotes and pick the cheapest. My experience with a few hundred orders suggests relationship consistency and pre-production checks usually beat marginal savings. The cheapest thermoplastic PVC sheet we ever bought looked fine in the sample photo and then warped in forming. That one order cost us $600 in material plus a week of schedule delay. Looking back, I should have sent a test sample and done a trial run first. It felt like a needless extra step at the time. It isn't. A little prevention is the cheapest insurance.
One caveat: my experience comes from one company's purchasing desk. If you're buying for high-volume extrusion rather than custom thermoforming, your checklist will look different. But the habit of verifying before committing will serve you just as well.
