I’ve been managing procurement for a mid-sized signage and display company for about six years now. In that time, I’ve processed over 400 orders for plastic sheets—PVC, PET, BOPET, you name it. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: anyone who tells you there’s a single 'best' material for every job hasn’t actually done the job.
The reality? Choosing between PVC sheet, PET sheet, and BOPET film depends entirely on three things: what you’re making, how you’re making it, and what your customer values most. Price is a factor, but total cost of ownership (TCO) is what really matters.
Let’s break it down by scenario. I’ll walk you through three common situations I’ve seen—and which material I’d spec in each case.
Scenario A: You’re Producing High-Volume, Standard Signage (Think Retail Displays)
This is the bread and butter of the industry. Rigid signage for point-of-purchase displays, shelf talkers, or temporary outdoor signs. The client wants it cheap, they want it consistent, and they want it fast.
My recommendation: PVC sheet (expanded or rigid).
Here’s why. For standard, large-format signage, PVC is the workhorse. It’s cost-effective, easy to cut and route, and accepts digital printing well. In Q2 2024, when I audited our material costs across 12 vendors, standard white PVC sheet was consistently 25-30% cheaper per square foot than PET sheet for comparable thicknesses.
But—and this is critical—that’s only true for standard runs. When we ramped up to a 10,000-piece order for a national retail chain, we needed tight thickness tolerances. - Your primary concern is cost per part, and you’ve verified the supplier’s quality control. (Should mention: we now require a sample from every new batch before approving production.)
Scenario B: You’re Printing High-Resolution Graphics That Need to Last
This is the dental office wall decor, the museum exhibit panel, or the high-end restaurant menu that can’t look yellowed in six months. The client is willing to pay more for longevity and clarity.
My recommendation: PET sheet (or recycled PET sheet for the eco-conscious client).
PET is inherently clearer than PVC. It doesn’t have the plasticizer migration issues that can cause yellowing over time. And if you’re marketing to clients who care about sustainability—and who isn’t, as of 2025?—recycled PET sheet is a strong selling point.
We switched a health care client to recycled PET sheet for their exam room signage last year. It cost about 10% more than the virgin PVC they’d been using, but they built a whole campaign around 'sustainable materials in patient care.' The value proposition wasn’t just the sheet—it was the story.
The hidden cost to watch for: PET can be more brittle than PVC, especially in thin gauges. If you’re die-cutting intricate shapes, you might see more cracking. Scenario C: You Need a Thin, Flexible, High-Tensile Material for Labels or Lamination
This is a completely different use case. You’re not making a rigid sign; you’re making a label that wraps around a curved surface, or a protective overlay for a printed graphic. Thicknesses under 0.5mm.
My recommendation: BOPET film.
Biaxially oriented PET (BOPET) is a different animal. It’s stretched during manufacturing, giving it much higher tensile strength and dimensional stability than cast PET or PVC. It’s what you see in high-end laminate pouches, release liners, or flexible circuit boards.
Here’s the thing: BOPET is not a substitute for PVC or PET sheet. They’re different products for different jobs. I’ve seen procurement managers try to spec BOPET film for a rigid sign because 'it’s the same material.' It is not. The orientation process makes it thinner and stronger, but also harder to bond with adhesive without corona treatment.
In 2023, I compared costs across 8 vendors for a BOPET laminate project. Vendor A quoted $0.45/sqft. Vendor B quoted $0.32/sqft. I almost went with B until I calculated TCO: B charged $0.08/sqft for corona treatment, plus a $150 setup fee for slitting to our width. Total: $0.46/sqft. Vendor A’s $0.45 included everything. That’s a negligible difference, but Vendor B’s lead time was 2 weeks longer. The 'cheap' option would have delayed the project by 10 days. Not worth it.
When to pull the trigger:
- You need film under 0.05mm for lamination or overlay.
- Heat resistance and dimensional stability are critical (BOPET handles higher temps than PVC).
- You’re using a high-speed roll-to-roll process.
How to Determine Which Scenario You’re In
Here’s the framework I use. It took me about 3 years of trial and error to formalize this—and probably a few thousand dollars in avoidable mistakes.
- What is the final part’s primary job? Is it structural (a sign that stands up) or decorative (a print that looks good)? Structural = PVC sheet. Decorative with longevity = PET sheet. Flexible and thin = BOPET film.
- What volume are you ordering? Under 100 sheets? You’re probably fine with PET, even if slightly more expensive, because the material cost difference is negligible compared to print labor. Over 1000 sheets? The material cost matters—PVC sheet is likely your play.
- What is your client’s brand? If they market themselves on sustainability, recycled PET sheet is the only conversation worth having. If they market on 'lowest price', PVC sheet is the answer. If they care about innovation and technical specs, BOPET might be a selling point.
The trick is not to overthink it. A colleague of mine once said, 'The best material is the one that meets the spec and ships on Tuesday.' She wasn’t wrong. Process efficiency is a competitive advantage—and that means making a decision, not deliberating for three weeks.
At least, that’s been my experience with these three materials. I should note that new formulations are coming out all the time—like UV-resistant plastics that bridge the gap between PVC and PET. But for the core choices? This framework has held up across 400+ orders and counting.
