Under 21 CFR 177.1520, polypropylene is approved for articles that touch food. That is not a loophole. It means the FDA reviewed the polymer chemistry and determined that when PP is produced to specification, it doesn't migrate chemicals into food at levels that would harm anyone.

I know “at levels that would harm anyone” sounds like a lawyer wrote it. Toxicity is a function of dose and exposure. Polypropylene in normal contact—cold storage tubs, hot liquid in a PP cup, food packaging, lab equipment, thermoformed sheet—simply doesn't leach hazardous substances into whatever it touches.

The reality is that polypropylene, PET, PVC, PS, and ABS are completely different polymers with completely different chemical profiles. People assume all plastics behave alike. What they don't see is the difference between the polymer itself and the stuff mixed into it.

The PET / Pet Confusion

A customer once asked whether our PET sheets were “safe around pet rabbits.” I said yes before realizing we were having two different conversations. I meant polyethylene terephthalate. They meant their daughter's rabbit.

If you're in the great majority of industrial applications—food packaging, thermoformed trays, sheet and film, automotive interior parts—polypropylene and PET are well-documented, defensible choices. The remaining fraction of applications needs an engineer's review, not a panic.
