Why Your ABS Scrap Pile is Growing—And Why Most Recyclability Advice is Wrong

A supplier-side look at why ABS plastic recycling is harder than it sounds, and what to do about it.

The recycling symbol that lied to me

I remember my first month handling shrink film orders for a mid-size thermoforming shop. We had a dedicated bin for plastic scrap, sorted by resin type—clean, segregated, ready to go. I assumed that's all recycling meant.

Then I found out the local recycler wouldn't take our ABS offcuts. They said 'not profitable.'

That was 2019. I've been fielding this same frustration ever since. Most buyers focus on the chasing arrows symbol and completely miss the hidden reality of plastic recyclability. The symbol doesn't mean 'this will get recycled.' It means 'this could be recycled, under ideal conditions.'

Those conditions are rarely met.

The real gap: It's not just about material

When someone asks 'is ABS plastic recyclable,' they're usually thinking about the polymer itself. Technically, yes—ABS can be ground, washed, extruded, and reformed. That's true for most thermoplastics. The problem isn't the plastic. It's the economic viability and infrastructure.

The reality is that ABS recycling is a niche within a niche. Here's why most operations hit a wall:

  • Contamination: ABS is often blended with other resins (like PC/ABS blends) or has coatings. A single contaminated batch can ruin an entire melt.
  • Volume thresholds: Most recyclers require truckload quantities (20,000+ lbs) to justify processing a single resin type. Your 5,000-lb scrap pile? Not worth their line changeover.
  • Deterioration: Even 'recyclable' ABS degrades with each heat cycle. The property loss matters for high-stress parts like automotive interior trim.

The question everyone asks is 'can ABS be recycled?' The question they should ask is 'can my specific ABS waste, in my volume, at my location, be recycled economically?'

What this costs you (beyond the bin)

I see clients making the same mistake I made in 2019—assuming every scrap piece has a recycling home. The cost isn't just disposal fees. It's time spent searching for a recycler, delays in clearing shop floor space, and lost revenue from what could be sold as regrind material.

On a single 3,000-lb order where we had to landfill ABS rejects, the disposal cost was only $120. But the missed opportunity? That virgin-equivalent regrind could have sold for $0.35–$0.50/lb. The total waste: over $1,000—plus the environmental guilt.

After the third rejection from recyclers in Q1 2024, I created our pre-check list for ABS orders (see below). We've caught 47 potential issues since then—including orders that looked like standard ABS but were actually a PC/ABS blend with no recycling outlet.

So what actually helps?

Honestly, there's no silver bullet. But here's what actually moves the needle, based on my experience working with manufacturers who handle ABS daily:

1. Know your supply chain options for custom manufacturing

Westlake, for example, doesn't pretend to recycle ABS. But they (and similar custom sheet/film manufacturers) can help you design for recyclability by specifying single-resin materials—or by sourcing recycled-content ABS (rABS) so your own scrap at least matches the regrind stream. That's the kind of supplier collaboration that closes the loop.

The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else. Specialization matters.

2. Verify your resin

Don't assume. Run a simple burn test or send a sample for FTIR analysis. If your 'ABS' contains other polymers, your recyclability goes to zero. This cost us $890 once in redo plus a 1-week delay.

3. Ask the right questions upfront

When ordering custom ABS sheet or roll stock, ask: 'What is the recycling infrastructure for this specific grade in my region?' Most suppliers won't volunteer the answer. If they can't tell you, find a partner who tracks this.

Bottom line

I can only speak to my context—domestic thermoforming operations dealing with 5,000–50,000 lb annual scrap volumes. If you're working with injection molding or international logistics, the calculus might be very different.

This approach worked for us because we finally stopped assuming the recycling symbol meant anything. We started treating it as a verification problem, not a materials problem.

And that saved us a ton of money—not to mention a lot of landfill guilt.
