Let's cut to the chase: 5 PP is polypropylene, and it's one of the most dependable food-safe plastics for small bottles, caps, and custom packaging. But if you're sourcing parts in a hurry—say, for a product launch in Westlake—the resin code alone isn't enough. You also need to check the mold, the printing spec, and the real production lead time before you place an order.

In my role coordinating rush orders for plastic sheets, films, and thermoformed parts, I've handled more than 200 urgent jobs. Here's the thing: “food-grade” is not a single label. The base resin can be food-safe while the colorants, slip agents, or mold-release additives are not. Put another way: don't assume a 5-PP bottle is safe just because it has a number in the triangle. Ask for the full formulation or a food-contact compliance statement.

My experience is based on around 200 mid-range packaging orders, mostly food, pet products, and retail displays. If you're working in medical devices, your requirements are stricter, and this guide doesn't cover them.

Small Plastic Bottles: PP vs PET vs PVC

Small plastic bottles are typically PET, HDPE, or PP. PET is the clearest and best for carbonated drinks. HDPE is tougher and cheaper, but less clear. PP is the go-to when you need heat resistance—like hot-fill bottles or dishwasher-safe containers—or chemical resistance for cleaning products. It's also lighter than PET for the same wall thickness, which can save on shipping.

But there's a nuance: PP is not as glossy or clear as PET. If your product lives or dies by shelf appearance, consider PET or a clarified PP grade. (Note to self: always ask the buyer which part of the package matters most—the looks or the function.)

PVC is a different animal. It's stiff, affordable, and thermoforms beautifully, which is why you see it in custom trays and clamshells. Last Valentine's season, a pet supplies company in Westlake asked for a “heart PVC” display tray—heart-shaped, made of PVC—for a treat sampler. It's a custom-shape job, not a bottle-resin question.

  • Send Pantone numbers, not “brand blue.” Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2-4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. (Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines.)
  • Give artwork at 300 DPI at final size. A 3000 × 2000 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 10″ × 6.67″ max. If your label is smaller, fine; if it's bigger, you're going to see pixels.
  • Request a proof on the actual substrate. PP and PVC absorb ink differently from paper. What looks crisp on a proof sheet can turn muddy on a PET bottle.

It's tempting to think you can just compare unit prices. But identical specs from different converters can result in wildly different color and registration. The cheapest quote is rarely the lowest total cost when you factor in reprints and missed launches.

When These Rules Don't Apply

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Recycled-content mandates, new bio-attributed PP grades, and digital printing have changed how we source plastic. Recycled PET and recycled PP are no longer niche options; they're part of the standard conversation. But some fundamentals haven't changed: you still need the right polymer, a clean mold, and a printing spec that matches your substrate.

That said, there are exceptions. If you're packaging high-acid foods or solvents, don't rely on a resin code—ask for chemical compatibility data. If you need medical-grade packaging, talk to someone who does only that. And if you need a part in 36 hours, expect to pay for certainty. Same-day service exists, but it costs more and it's not available for every custom shape.

Looking back, I should have specified the PP grade more clearly on a hot-fill bottle order. At the time, “food-grade polypropylene” seemed enough. It wasn't—the first bottle warped. We recovered, but the lesson stuck: the resin code is the beginning, not the end.
