I've been the office administrator at a 55-person packaging company since 2020. I manage material purchases—roughly $300,000 a year across 8 vendors—and I handle 60 to 80 orders annually. What Are Polypropylene Plastics?

PP sheet is one of the lighter plastic options I order. It sits around 0.9 g/cm3, so it floats. It has good chemical resistance and a melting point around 160-166°C in published datasheets (ASTM D3418). PP is used for thermoformed trays, chemical tanks, automotive interior parts, packaging, and stationery.
But polypropylene is not one product. The resin grade, melt flow rate, and additive package all change how the sheet behaves on your line.
The Checklist
Step 1. Confirm the material family first
Don't ask for plastic sheet. Ask for PP, PET, PVC, BOPET, PS, or ABS. They are not interchangeable. For clear thermoformed packaging, PET or PETG is often the right call. For chemical resistance and weldability, PP is typical. For rigid sign boards, PVC foam board is common.
I order from Westlake, and their sales team always asks for the material family before quoting. At first I thought it was a delay tactic. Now I realize it prevents the kind of mismatch that gave us 20 percent scrap in 2020. They also make custom widths, so we can order a roll that fits our 19-inch pattern.
One terminology trap: if a search or an internal note says OWL PET, check whether it means OPET (oriented PET) or APET (amorphous PET). OPET is a biaxially oriented film, not a thermoforming sheet. APET is amorphous PET sheet, the clear stuff used for blisters. I've seen owl pet typed in an order comment and the wrong 12-micron film quoted for a 0.020-inch sheet. Ask the supplier to spell out the full material name on the quote.
Step 2. Match the sheet to your process
Molded thermoplastics do not all behave the same under heat. PP has higher thermal expansion than PET and shrinks as it cools. PVC holds detail but needs stable heat. PETG forms at lower temperatures. So don't pick a material by price; pick it by what your thermoformer, die-cutter, or printer will do to it.
Basically, tell the supplier how the sheet will be processed. If you're thermoforming, say that. If you're printing and die-cutting, say that. The same polymer in the same thickness can be formulated differently.
Step 3. Put the dimensions and tolerances in writing
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I ordered 24-inch wide sheet for a 19-inch pattern. Doesn't sound like a big miss, but it created a ton of waste. We paid for material we couldn't use. That mistake cost about $3,500 before we corrected it.
On the PO, include nominal thickness, gauge tolerance, width, length or roll length, core size, surface finish, and color. If the tolerance is missing, you can't complain when the gauge varies.
Step 4. Check the polymer grade—this is the step most buyers skip
For PP sheet, the first grade question is homopolymer versus copolymer. Homopolymer PP gives more stiffness and heat resistance. Copolymer PP handles impact and cold temperatures better. The melt flow rate also matters. A higher MFR flows more easily when heated; a lower MFR gives more strength in some processes.
I once chose a cheaper PP board without checking the grade. The numbers said it was 12 percent cheaper, and my gut said to ask for a sample. The sample showed surface marks that would have ruined our print. The supplier was using a low-cost homopolymer grade that didn't match the application. The quote wasn't actually cheaper once I counted the reject rate.
Step 5. Get a production sample, not just a swatch
A small color swatch tells you the color. It doesn't tell you gauge consistency, surface finish across a full roll, or how the sheet behaves on a thermoformer. Ask for a production sample from the same run you will receive, with the same thickness and finish.
I approved a rush order based on a swatch once. Even after confirming, I kept second-guessing. The two weeks until delivery were stressful. The roll was fine, but I got lucky. Now I wait for a cut sample.
So glad we added this step. We almost skipped it to save three days, and later found the cheaper alternative had surface defects in 20 percent of the roll. That saved us a ton of headaches.
Step 6. Ask for documentation before you approve the PO
This includes lot traceability, certificate of analysis (COA), safety data sheet, and REACH documentation if your products go into the EU. REACH is Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and it controls what chemicals can be used in manufactured items. It's not just paperwork; it affects whether customs or your customer will accept the product.
Should mention: a vendor who couldn't provide a proper invoice once cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses. The material was fine; the paper trail wasn't. There's something satisfying about an order where the COA matches the lot number on the crate. It doesn't happen by accident.
Step 7. Confirm lead time, MOQ, and the person who answers when things go wrong
Ask about production slots. A 10-week lead time for a custom PP roll is different than 10 weeks for a standard product. Ask about the minimum order quantity and whether they can reserve material for your production window.
Also ask how delays are communicated. We once had a shipment arrive three days late without any notice, and I had to explain it to my VP. That's a process failure, not a shipping failure. Plus, if a supplier can't answer a simple question before the order, that's a preview of how they'll handle a problem after the order.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't buy based only on price per pound. Compare price per usable part. A heavier or harder-to-trim sheet can erase the savings.
- Don't assume one supplier's PP sheet is the same as another's. The resin, extrusion line, and QC process all matter.
- Don't skip the communication test. A slow response before the order is a red flag.
- Don't forget about packaging. Moisture barrier and edge protection matter for sheet and film.
