Which Should You Choose?
Two questions kept showing up in my inbox last quarter. The first was about Westlake PVC pipe. The second was simpler and harder at the same time: what type of plastic is Teflon?
I'm not a chemist. I'm the person who handles purchasing for a mid-sized manufacturer—roughly 60 to 80 orders a year across eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which means I get pulled in two directions: operations wants the right material; finance wants the low price. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I thought the name on the quote was the whole story. After five years of managing these relationships, I've learned that the name matters less than the actual plastic chemistry behind it.
So let's compare the two materials people usually mean when they search for industrial pipe: PVC and PTFE. Not just price per foot. Total cost.
What We're Comparing: PVC vs. PTFE
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. It's a rigid, inexpensive thermoplastic used in pipe, fittings, sheets, and films. If you've searched for Westlake PVC pipe, you're probably comparing pipe schedules, wall thickness, and fittings like a PVC T.
What Type of Plastic Is Teflon?
PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene. Teflon is a brand name for PTFE. So when someone asks what type of plastic Teflon is, the answer is PTFE—a fluoropolymer, not a vinyl. PTFE is famous for two things: extreme chemical resistance and a very slippery surface.
They're not competitors in every application. But they are options for the same pipe run, and choosing wrong can cost you. Honestly, I'm not sure why some vendors say 'Teflon' when they mean PTFE. My best guess is that Teflon is the word everyone recognizes. It doesn't make the material wrong, but it makes spec clarity more important.
What 'Westlake PVC Pipe' Really Tells You
When someone searches for Westlake PVC pipe, they often expect a brand to guarantee quality. A reliable brand helps, but it doesn't replace the need to check the spec. I've seen name-brand pipe with mismatched fittings because the buyer didn't confirm the schedule. The fitting was schedule 40, the pipe was schedule 80, and the solvent weld didn't seat correctly.
Brand gives you traceability and support. Spec gives you fit, pressure rating, and safety. You need both.
Dimension 1: Chemical Compatibility
PVC handles water, wastewater, many acids, alkalis, and salts. It does not handle solvents, ketones, or aromatic hydrocarbons well. I learned this the hard way when a solvent line softened the PVC pipe we'd just installed. (Mental note: always check the chemical compatibility chart before assuming.)
PTFE is resistant to almost every chemical you can put in a pipe, including things that destroy PVC. That's why labs, chemical plants, and semiconductor facilities use PTFE-lined or PTFE pipe.
The comparison conclusion here is straightforward: if aggressive chemicals are involved, PTFE wins. For common water and drainage lines, PVC is more than enough.
Dimension 2: Temperature Limits
Standard PVC pipe is rated for continuous service up to about 140°F (60°C). Some schedules and CPVC variants go higher, but ordinary PVC doesn't. Black PVC pipes are still PVC—the color doesn't raise the temperature rating.
PTFE, on the other hand, can handle continuous service around 500°F (260°C). That's a huge gap. If your line carries hot fluids or steam, PVC will creep and fail. PTFE won't.
Does that mean PTFE is always better? No. It means those two materials belong in different worlds.
Dimension 3: Mechanical Strength and Installation
PVC is rigid but not brittle if you choose the right schedule. It's easy to cut, easy to solvent-weld, and easy to find PVC T fittings at any supply house. A PVC T connector costs a few dollars and installs in minutes.
PTFE is a different beast. It's chemically incredible but mechanically soft. It can deform under load, and bonding PTFE is tricky. You often need special fittings, heat fusion, or compression hardware. The material cost is one thing; the installation cost is another.
Here's the thing: a 'cheap' PTFE quote can turn into an expensive project once you add special fabrication. PVC T fittings keep installation simple. But if the application needs PTFE, simplicity doesn't matter—you need the material that won't fail.
Dimension 4: Total Cost of Ownership
I almost got burned by unit price. A few years ago, a new vendor quoted black PVC pipes at 18% below our regular supplier. The number looked great on the purchase order. Then the shipment arrived without proper markings. We couldn't verify the schedule rating, so the safety team rejected it. Reordering and expediting cost more than the original savings.
The lowest price per foot can be the most expensive pipe in the ground.
That's why I now calculate total cost before comparing quotes. Total cost includes unit price, freight, installation labor, downtime, maintenance, and the cost of a failure. I do not mean the low-price vendor is always bad. I mean the lowest quote is the starting point, not the conclusion.
Contrast that with PTFE. A PTFE pipe quote will almost always be higher than PVC. But if a line needs chemical resistance or high heat, the TCO of PVC is the failure, not the savings. Even after approving the PTFE order for our high-temp line, I kept second-guessing. What if the vendor's fabrication wasn't up to spec? The three weeks until delivery were stressful. It worked out, but the anxiety was real.
Black PVC Pipes and PVC T Fittings: What to Verify
Black PVC pipes seem to confuse people. In many markets, black pipe means ABS or HDPE. But black PVC pipes are also available, usually with carbon black added for UV resistance in outdoor runs. The material is still PVC.
I once said 'black pipe.' The supplier heard 'ABS pipe.' We discovered the miscommunication when the first joint wouldn't solvent-weld. If you order black PVC pipes, put 'PVC' in writing on the purchase order.
If you're ordering PVC T fittings or black PVC pipes, verify three things:
- Schedule rating (40 vs. 80)
- Pressure rating at your operating temperature
- Material certification or data sheet
In that order.
Also, if a supplier calls a product 'green' or 'recycled,' ask for proof. Per the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims have to be truthful and substantiated. I've seen vague claims from vendors who couldn't provide a single document. Don't accept that.
Which Should You Choose?
If you're running water, drainage, irrigation, or vent lines at normal temperatures, PVC is the right choice. It's proven, inexpensive, and easy to install. Add a PVC T where you need a branch, choose the proper schedule, and you're done.
If you're handling aggressive chemicals, high heat, or need a non-stick surface, PTFE is the better starting point. You'll pay more, but you're buying survival, not a lower invoice.
One more note: whether you're buying pipe, fittings, sheet, or film, the rule is the same. Understand the chemistry, verify the specs, and calculate total cost. That's how you make a decision you won't have to explain to your finance team later.
